Tonight

Connecting Tonight to ChatGPT

Tonight keeps a taste model that belongs to you. Your assistant reads it, finds you something to watch, and — when you say something worth keeping — writes it back. These four steps are what puts the two in touch.

Written for ChatGPT, because that is the one we illustrate. Tonight speaks MCP and any host that does can be pointed at the same address.

  1. Add the MCP connector

Tonight's address is https://tonight.movie/mcp. Add it as a custom MCP connector; ChatGPT will read it to see which tools it offers.

Signing in to Google happens here, inside ChatGPT's own flow rather than on this website. Tonight is a closed beta, so the address you sign in with has to be one that was invited — that check happens at this step and nowhere later.

    https://tonight.movie/mcp

You should see: The connector is listed, and Tonight's tools appear under it.

Signing in to Google works, and Tonight then refuses.
That address is not on the beta list. Signing in with a different Google account is the fix; nothing about the connector is wrong.
The tools cannot be read, or authorization is declined.
Nothing has been connected and nothing was written. Removing the connector and adding it again is safe.
  2. Create a ChatGPT project

Create a project and give it any name you like. The project is what holds the instructions from the next step, which is what makes Tonight behave the same way in every conversation instead of only when you explain it again.

While you are setting the project up you will be asked how its memory should work. Worth knowing before you choose: the project's memory and your taste model are two separate stores. Tonight cannot see what the project remembers, and this website cannot show it. Which setting you pick is yours to decide.

You should see: An empty project, with somewhere to put its instructions.

  3. Paste the project instructions

Copy the instructions from this page and paste them into the project's instructions field. They are what tells the assistant how to use Tonight: when to look at your taste model, what may be written to it, and what may not.

They carry a version on their last line. If this page ever shows a different one, replace what is in your project with the current text — the instructions are where the rules about what gets saved live, so an old copy is not merely an old copy.

    Version ae863227

You should see: The project's instructions end with the same version line this page shows.

The text will not all fit, or is cut off when saved.
The version line is the last line, so if it is missing from what saved, the rest was truncated too. Tell us — the instructions are ours to shorten, not yours.
  4. Turn Tonight on, then ask

A connector that is installed is not a connector that is being used. Tonight has to be switched on for this project, or named in your message, before the assistant will reach for it. This is the step people skip, because nothing in the first three suggests there is one more.

Check it before you rely on it, and check it in a way that cannot be answered from memory: ask ChatGPT to call Tonight's `get_server_info` tool and tell you the version it reports. There is one right answer, 0.1.0, and it is not something an assistant can produce by being agreeable — either it called Tonight or it did not.

Then ask for a film the way you would ask a person: what you are in the mood for, and what you are not.

You should see: It reports Tonight version 0.1.0. Asking what it knows about your taste is not the same test: an assistant with no connector answers that one just as fluently, and on a new account “nothing yet” is what both of them say.

It says it has no such tool, or no Tonight connector.
It is not switched on for this project. That is this step, not an earlier one — the connector can be installed and still be unavailable here.
It answers about your taste but will not report a version.
It is answering from its own knowledge and never called Tonight. An assistant that cannot run the tool will often discuss it instead.
It reports the version, but nothing you say is ever saved.
Reading works and writing does not, which is the one failure that looks like success. Tell us which kind of ChatGPT account this is.

Once it works

Nothing else to set up. Ask for a film when you want one, and the taste model grows out of what you tell it — never out of what it concluded about you. Signing in to this website is optional: it is where you look at what has accumulated, and where you can change it by hand if you would rather.
